Andy's Takeaway delivers extra profit with mobo2go

Andy's Takeaway is a multi award winning fish and chip shop situated in the bustling town of Barrow-in-Furness. Andy's is a long established, family run business which is widely regarded as being the best fish and chip shop in town. Famous not only for its fresh fish and chips but also delicious pizza and kebabs.

Like thousands of other takeaways across the UK, Andy’s signed up with one of the major online food ordering portals as a way to increase sales. Initially, owner Dave Maloney, was very happy with the instant boost in sales and his customers liked the convenience of ordering online.

However, at the end of the year Dave had quite a shock when he sat down with his accountant to review his year end accounts. On the face of it his business was booming, sales were significantly up and the shop was really busy. Unfortunately, the bottom line figures for Andy’s were telling a different story - the transaction fees for each online order had taken a very big bite out of Andy’s profits, as had the increase in variable costs such as driver wages.

Another issue that niggled Dave was the fact that the regular customer base he had built up over the years now had to order from the online ordering portal where he was listed alongside all of his competitors. He felt that he was almost becoming a franchisee which was weakening the strength of the brand he had created.

The final straw came when, for the 3rd time, his order transaction fees were increased. That’s when Dave decided to shop around and look for a company that could provide him with his own online ordering solution that would enable him to continue growing his business and protect the brand he had built up over the last 30 years.

Dave found a few companies offering online ordering solutions for restaurants and takeaways but in the end he went with a recommendation from his local EPOS supplier (Harmony EPOS Solutions) and selected the mobo2go online ordering system from Mobo Innovations. What set Mobo apart was their expertise and advice in helping to establish a marketing strategy for the new online ordering service.

Initially, Andys ran their own online ordering system alongside the food ordering portal but concentrated on marketing their own business and website. Dave found that he had to put the time and effort into making his customers aware of his new service but Mobo were on hand to share their experience and best practice with him. He quickly found that customers were more than happy to order through his own website.

One of the big benefits Dave saw was the steady increase in his customer database as the orders increased. He now has several thousand loyal customers that have opted in to receive special offers from Andys Takeaway. Dave has made good use of the inbuilt SMS text marketing platform to drive sales but his business is now at a level where he only runs promotions on his quieter days of the week.

After 6 month of running the two systems together, Dave was confident enough to drop the online food ordering portal and go it alone. Since then Dave has not looked back, his business has gone from strength to strength, online orders have continued to grow and his costs have been dramatically reduce. Instead of paying thousands of pounds per year in order transaction fees he now pays a small fixed monthly fee.

The last word goes to owner, Dave:

“The decision to drop the online food ordering portal and go it alone was a little scary but to be honest its one of the best decision I have ever made. I now have control of my business and the marketing tools to continue its growth. Yes, it does take time and effort but the financial benefits are huge.”

“The team at Mobo have supported me all the way and I would not hesitate to recommend them and the mobo2go online ordering system.”
